The Post-Pandemic Era:
A New World Order?

What will the post-pandemic world look like? No one can predict precisely, but everyone understands the ‘new normal’ will operate differently.

ALUMNI MEETINGS

3–6 September 2019

In 2020, we organized five online prayer meetings for our alumni to intercede on the pandemic. About 20 to 25 alumni from different countries came together to pray. We also held an online prayer meeting for the Singapore general elections and had our first Homecoming Day on Zoom. These connections led to requests for more meet-ups with fellow alumni. Seven meet-ups for 2021 have been planned. It is such a delight to see friends connecting after many decades!

We also met the May and November 2020 graduands, and will meet with the May 2021 graduands. We pray for them in their time of transition and have found this most rewarding.

THE PASTORS SEMINAR & FELLOWSHIP: DYNAMICS OF THE PASTOR-CHURCH BOARD RELATIONSHIP

18 January 2021

About 70 pastors and church leaders heard Rev. Peter Lin speak on the roles and responsibilities of the pastor and church board, and touch on three foundations to unity between them: the doctrinal, relational, and philosophical. He also mentioned the need to build trust.

Our first respondent, Dr. Louis Tan, shared the spiritual, personal and organizational aspects of his church's leadership team’s weekly dawn prayer meetings, clarification of roles, and embracing of the ‘helmsman’ principle. Our second respondent, Rev. Keith Lai, highlighted the implications of the doctrine of justification on the pastor-church board relationship. He also shared his church’s leadership operational manual.

WORSHIP SERVICE LED BY SCM AT THE 2021 CALVIN SYMPOSIUM ON WORSHIP

19 January 2021

With theologians, liturgists, ethno-doxologists, pastors, hymn writers, and musicians logging in to the international event hosted by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, we thank God for the opportunity to boast about him and his work among us in SBC. Our students experienced the warm reception of the global church towards their own ethnicity, music, and culture.

HYMN REFLECTIONS 2021

27 March 2021

Hymn Reflections 2021 was the first to be bilingual. Filming their parts individually, the SCM community ministered to many hurting from worries about possible civil war at home, losing friends to COVID-19, and fear and uncertainty about jobs and ministry definition. They responded well to our call to the church to look to Christ’s return and him making good on his promises.

SOC COUNSELLING WEEK

22–26 February 2021

Praise God for his hand on Counselling Week! Twelve webinars organized by SOC were aired on Zoom and YouTube. We covered sexuality, suffering and depression, shame, pornography addiction, homosexuality, parenting, anxiety, spiritual direction, extramarital affairs, and third-culture kids. SOC faculty and friends from SOTE laboured to deliver well on these topics.

There were over 20,000 views from Singapore, Asia, and beyond, and the talks were recorded for viewing after the event. One of our viewers in Sri Lanka had this to say:

I want to write and say thank you for all the effort and time everyone has put in to bless, challenge, and encourage us all. I appreciate the global perspective and feel like my horizons have been broadened as I listened and thought through what was taught.

MISSIONS EMPHASIS WEEK

8–12 March 2021

Rev. Dr. Chan Kim-Kwong spoke on the theme, “Exploring New Frontiers in Missions”. The week was capped by the International Fair and Night. Because of pandemic restrictions, the events had to be organized differently—becoming indeed a “new frontier” for all students, faculty, and staff! Under these challenging circumstances, the SBC community found opportunities to innovate and be creative as the different nations shared about their cultures and how they encountered “new frontiers” in missions because of the pandemic. Despite the real difficulties, there was great joy and hope. Praise God!
