School of Theology English
Dean of SOTE - Dr Calvin Chong

A Word from the Dean

Almost 20 years ago when I was doing theological studies in London, I went out on a walk with the curate of a local congregation. As our conversation unfolded, I asked him a question about faith in Christ. “Me Christian? No, I’m just clergy!” was his reply.

That remark has been etched indelibly in my mind and has shaped my thinking about the purpose of theological education. Theological education, I remind myself over and over again, should not merely serve the function of professional credentialing, but exists to develop leaders with a passion for preserving and promoting the identity and mission of the church.

A prominent seminary leader once wrote, “The capacity of theological schools to contour the faith and life of the church is beyond dispute. As seedbeds of the church’s leadership, seminaries shape the lives, hearts and minds of those who shape the church.” But as the quotation as well as the experience I described suggest, both the quality of leadership as well as the quality of the ministerial preparation experience matters to the life and health of the church.

In its 50 years of existence, the School of Theology (English) has postured itself to serve churches and Christian organizations in Singapore and in regions beyond. We presently offer nine graduate level programmes which help men and women prepare for a range of different ministries and opportunities for Christian service.

In a fast changing, globally connected world which has seen tremendous shifts in socio-cultural landscapes, the challenge is for a new generation of men and women to provide leadership for the church in both geographic spaces as well as electronic arenas. At the School of Theology (English), our desire is to provide holistic development within a well-resourced learning community. While we spend many hours seeking to inquire, understand and interpret God’s Word and other bodies of knowledge, we are also deeply committed to developing needed ministerial skills, as well as caring for and shaping the inner landscapes of members of our community.

As a school, we are mindful of the constant need for renewal, and as the Academic Dean, I seek to provide rich and relevant learning experiences for our students as well as resources for alumni beyond their time with us. Learning at SOTE takes place within a rich multicultural community with both international as well as pan Asian faculty representation.

Please take time to review the different programmes and events we offer and to see how they may contribute to your educational objectives and ministerial goals.

Welcome to the School of Theology (English)!
